below is my (lukey's) heart-wrenching account of how three four five six seven eight seven adolescents can make a difference in this dying world… grab your tissues.
joe sheehan and i met at a local coffee shop in our hometown, pitman, nj during the summer of 2000 (RIP to the best summer ever…). joe and i start talking, and find that we have similar music interests. after hearing my incredible skills at power chords on an out of tune acoustic guitar, joe bribes me with rice cakes to come to his house and jam for a little. thus Ħthe banana factor! was born. luckily, one of my best friends, luke martin, had just purchased an incredibly sweet bass (and an amp about the size of an acorn). unluckily, luke had never played the bass before. with incredible innate ability, luke is now the bass guitar monstrosity (BGM) that can play anything that we muster up.
our practices took place in joe’s garage (to the utmost annoyance of the neighbors) for a bit, and the first few ones were… well… not so hot. however, we quickly developed a good, although not quite creative sound (thank me for the not creative part). using the most ghetto fabulous (i.e. trash-picked, borrowed, junky, etc) equipment available, we played our instruments like monkeys swing on trees in a rainforest… after playing a birthday party show (shudder), and learning about 10 songs together, we expanded our horizons to another one of my bestest friends, jacob thies.
jacob, our ex-saxaphone player has again amazed us with his skills at musical instruments. the saxaphone broke at the bunny benefit II, and now he has again picked up a new instrument...the slide trombone! jacob is noted for his bizarre dancing rituals at shows when not playing, and his large shoe size (last time i checked it was 15). jacob joined the ranks of Ħthe banana factor! sometime during september or october of 2000. now, every show that he's not at is destined to be poop b/c he adds such energy and insanity. jacob, we love you.
enter danger. andrew “danger” krinks plays a mean guitar, and has been my friend for as long as i can remember. after realizing how my being in a ska band made all the girls swoon and gave myself immense popularity—oh, sorry, that was a dream…ahhh… yeah. wait...NO FAIR...it's worked for him (twice now)! anyway, manger ranger danger joined up… i dunno… about november of 2000, and adds a powerful sound and rad rhythm.
andy! i fist met andy at work (shop n bag, boyee!). he moved on and we didn't talk for a while. we met up again later at a show and it was like magic! why did i write that? he emailed me a few days later about a band he was putting together, and i told him (semi-jokingly) that if he ever played the trombone, that he would have a happy home with Ħtbf! in the next email, he expressed his yearning to play trombone, and so i bought one, and now he's part of it! after a while, he's switched to keyboard. we've been practicing with him, and hopefully we'll have parts for him to play soon...the rest is future...it hasn't really happened yet.
alexander jung chin is all that we hoped he'd be, and more! jacob told us tales of his splendor and coolness, and from the first practice, it's been woderful! he's incredible at the trumpet, and whenever he plays a new part to a song, it sounds golden. alex is completely insane when around his school friends, yet when he's around us, it's the silent treatment! don't worry, we all know he's going to go insane with us soon enough! i'm still trying to meet his incredibly asian parents, and ask them how to pronouce all those great chinese food names we've all grown to love.
Ħthe banana factor! is also more than just the music. if you've ever been to a show or even a practice, you can tell (i hope) that we are all good friends, and that we just enjoy making music...or something close to it at least. any lyrics that are trying to support a worthy cause, or to oppose something like abortion are written in a way that can hopefully make a change. i'm tired of what angry bands that only yell and fight about things, but offer no solutions to the problems that the address. they somehow think will make the situation better, but are probably solving nothing. we like to keep the pit at our shows without fighting, so that no one gets hurt, and also so no one feels afraid to dance. music can be used for a lot of things, and we try to use it to get our message across and to have a rad time.
we have all these horn players now, but keep in mind that it's still really under construction as far as having songs down and stuff. most likely, we won't have a lot of horns at our next few shows, but we're slowly working things out.
